ItemEditorial(Global Campus of Human Rights, 2019) [...]This is the fifth issue of the Global Campus Human Rights Journal. It consists of two parts. The first part provides a special focus on ‘technology and human rights’, an area of growing interest and concern. In seven articles devoted to this topic, authors from across the globe investigate this issue. These seven articles are based on papers that were presented at an event of the Global Campus of Human Rights at which students, lecturers and other scholars interrogated the topic ‘The impact of new technologies on human rights’. The Global Campus of Human Rights consists of the Global Campus Europe, South East Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, Caucasus, Latin America and the Arab World, with the participation of post-graduate students from their respective Master’s programmes in Human Rights and Democracy. The second part of this issue of the Journal contains a discussion of ‘recent developments’ in the fields of human rights and democratisation in five of the regions covered by the Global Campus of Human Rights. In this issue, developments during 2018 in five regions are covered: Europe, the Asia Pacific, the countries making up the Eastern Partnership, sub-Saharan Africa and South East Europe.

The first part, ‘Special focus: Selected developments in the area of children’s rights’, is the first time the Journal devotes special attention to the rights of children. In the second part, we publish a single article of a general bearing. In this article, Chofor Che finds the root causes for the ongoing political malaise in Cameroon in the failure of that state to effectively implement the decentralisation framework provided for under the 1996 Constitution of Cameroon. The third part contains a regular feature of the Journal, a discussion of ‘recent developments’ in the fields of human rights and democratisation in four of the regions covered by the Global Campus of Human Rights.

ItemGlobal Campus Human Rights Journal, Volume 4 No 2(Global Campus of Human Rights, 2020) [...]This volume of the Global Campus Human Rights Journal consists of three parts. The first part is a ‘Special focus: Selected developments in the area of children’s rights’. This is the second occasion on which the Journal devotes special attention to the rights of children. The special focus is a product of this collaboration between the Global Campus of Human Rights and the Right Livelihood Foundation. In 2019 a cooperation agreement was signed between the Global Campus of Human Rights and the Right Livelihood Foundation. Its purpose is to ‘promote the acknowledgment and observance of human and child rights and to strengthen the participation of children in all matters affecting their lives in the present and in the future’. The Right Livelihood Foundation is a Swedish charity organisation, the mission of which is to honour and support courageous people solving global problems. The Foundation is a politically-independent and nonideological platform for the voices of its Laureates to be heard. The articles in this part are linked to the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty (2019). In 2020 the ‘Global Classroom 2020’, which was presented virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, focused on the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty and the implementation of its recommendations. These Global Classrooms, a feature of the Global Campus since 2013, brings together students and professors from all regional hubs for a week-long conference where a topic of common interest is studied, analysed and discussed. The Global Classroom facilitates interaction among students from the different regional programmes by ii (2020) 4 Global Campus Human Rights Journal organising dedicated activities and providing a forum for discussion and networking. The articles in this part of the Journal are all products of collaboration between students and staff working with each of the regional Master’s programmes within the framework of the collaboration between the Global Campus of Human Rights and the Right Livelihood Foundation.

This was the theme of the Global Classroom in 2021, organised every year by Global Campus of Human Rights. The second part includes an article by Kawado Appiagyei-Atua which undertakes a critical assessment of academic freedom at Ghana’s public universities. The last part is a review on children's participation in qualitative research by Mark Capaldi.

ItemGlobal Campus Human Rights Journal, Volume 6 No 2(Global Campus Human Rights, 2022) [...]This is the eleventh issue of the Global Campus Human Rights Journal. It consists of eight articles resulting from a special cooperation with the GC Human Rights Preparedness Blog which has provided a valuable platform for innovative and inclusive conversations within the Global Campus network and beyond. In this regard, this blog generally invites contributors to explain the ways in which protecting, respecting and fulfilling human rights is vital in meeting the challenges of pandemics and other emergencies, or to imagine how human rights could be better prepared for such challenges in view of where, how and why human rights have failed or done less well than anticipated. Seven articles are based on shorter contributions previously published by Global Campus alumni acting as regional correspondents for the aforementioned blog after having been trained by Rosie Cowan, a member of the blog editorial team. The eighth article is written by the lead editor of the blog. All these articles provide insights into different topics from a rights-based approach taking into account that there are lessons to be learned from the past and preparations that can be made for the future.

ItemJust Transition: Conditions for Change of the Global Order. Global Classroom 2024. Collection of student abstracts( 2024) [...]The Global Classroom 2024 was a transformative six-month program, culminating in a student conference held from June 17-21 in Bishkek and Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Bringing together students from eight regional Master’s programs across the Global Campus network, the initiative centred around the theme “Just Transition: Conditions for Change of the Global Order.” This was not just a conference but the result of months of rigorous academic work, collaboration, and dedication from both students and organizers. The program provided a platform for in-depth research on issues like civil society engagement, democratic institution building, transitional justice, and the resilience of democratic institutions in times of global transition. The Global Classroom 2024 began with a competitive selection process that brought together a diverse group of students from across multiple regions, who then engaged in rigorous preparation including a MOOC on Transitology. Over six months, extensive collaboration with local coordinators and experts led to refined research presentations at a conference, where students not only presented their work but also received valuable feedback and networked with peers. The program’s impact continues as students revise their papers for publication and the organizers collect feedback to enhance future iterations.

Available in English, Portuguese and Tetum languages, the textbook is meant to support the lecturers and students of the newly established curricular course "An Introduction to Human Rights in Southeast Asia", as well as any other higher education initiatives in Timor-Leste and beyond.

ItemRight Livelihood Laureates - GC Alumni Skills Exchange Series( 2024) [...] ; Global Campus of Human Rights ; Right Livelihood Laureates ; Global Campus AlumniIn 2024, the Global Campus Alumni network invited four Right Livelihood Laureates and four alumni to lead roundtable discussions on human rights-related skills. The exchange aimed to share tools, skills, and strategies used by Laureates and Alumni from various continents to achieve goals, overcome challenges, and bring about change. The March-June 2024 conversations between Alumni and Laureates offer valuable insights for any human rights defender, expert, or passionate individual. Topics covered include grassroots advocacy for environmental protection, LGBTQ+ community campaigns, community empowerment through solidarity and self management, and gender and anti-gender movements. This publication intends to provide guidance for those working in human rights, social justice, and climate justice. We believe the ideas shared by Right Livelihood Laureates and the Global Campus Alumni community Alumni can inspire worldwide initiatives for human rights and social justice, inspiring new approaches and collaboration across settings.

ItemUnited Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty( 2019) [...] ; Nowak, ManfredThe UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty is a comprehensive Study conducted by Manfred Nowak, a large team of experts from all over the world and 274 children who were interviewed. The findings of the Study concern six thematic areas in which children live deprived of liberty: juvenile justice, detention with their primary caregivers, for migration-related reasons, in institutions, in the context of armed conflict or on national security grounds. The Study also focuses on the gender dimension, the impact on the health of the children and children with disabilities, as well the views and perspectives of children themselves. According to the research more than 7 million children are currently living in deprivation of liberty. In addition to other findings related to the specific thematic areas, this comprehensive publication also contains a large set of recommendations. As a follow-up to the Study, many activities have been funded in order to implement these recommendations.
