dc.description.abstract Why is Child Labour a violation from the perspective of Human Rights? This thesis attempts to answer to this question, presenting the various aspects that give rise to child labour, such as the roots and causes. The research is conducted by analysing the legal instruments, the social aspect, but also the economic side of it, namely its costs and benefits. What are the main reasons that support the idea that child labour must move towards elimination? I present the different arguments that are in favour and against the eradication, and try to reach the most effective way towards this end. The right to education is given a special attention, because it is considered to be one of the central weapons in the fight against child labour. It is an empowerment right that is essential for children’s development. It is said to be a human right in itself and an indispensable means of realizing other human rights. Therefore, this thesis presents the right to education under the different international instruments, and describes how education can be a tool for combating child labour. The research focuses then on Brazil, and it will attempt to show the extent of child labour in this country, analysing its characteristics and the principle causes for it in this specific situation. Is the Brazilian government complying with its international obligations under the conventions that it ratified? Child labour must be a priority because children cannot wait to grow up. The danger is real and a global mobilisation is urgent. en_US
